Since October 7, Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has blown away all records for numbers of journalists killed in a single conflict – at least 238 per the Gaza Government Media Office, which according to Brown University exceeds “the U.S. Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the wars in Yugoslavia in the 1990s and 2000s, and the post-9/11 war in Afghanistan, combined.”
Unlike almost all these previous wars, the vast majority of journalists killed in this one were intentionally targeted for assassination by Israel. This systematic murder spree is compounded by Israel’s ban on foreign journalists in Gaza and the active collusion of Western news agencies. But while its scale since October 7 is unprecedented, Israel has refined its methods for decades and deployed them not just in Gaza but in the West Bank and even outside occupied Palestine.
From Ghassan Kanafani to Yaser Murtaja to Shireen Abu Akleh to the hundreds of journalists martyred in the current genocide, we investigate how Israel systematically marks out truth-tellers for death and assassinates their character beyond the grave.
